Our HACCP training course helped Multifry to improve their quality systems

I work for a small food manufacturing business in Hull called Multifry Limited. We supply vegetable oils to the food industry and have been established for 40 years. HACCP has played a key role in ensuring the safety of the products we supply. I enrolled on this course in order to gain a better understanding of HACCP as well as enabling me to join the HACCP team and help further develop our system. Management made the decision to expand the HACCP team as having a team member within the day-to-day operations was viewed as an important step to improving the system.

The course run by Mat at the Grimsby Institute was well organised, professionally delivered and supplied all the information required to not only pass the course, but to acquire a full understanding of what HACCP is. Grimsby Institute itself was clean, light and created a comfortable environment to learn within. It also had all the necessary facilities within the higher education building (where the course was located). Mat explained fully each stage of HACCP, giving practical examples from his own experience which helped highlight the usefulness of a HACCP system in reality. The HACCP system was also related to our own places of work, again helping us to fully understand the way the system works.

Since passing the course I have become an active member of the HACCP team at Multifry and have been able to suggest and implement improvements to our current HACCP system. I have also received new responsibilities in alignment with ISO22000. With the improvements to the HACCP and quality systems, we are hoping to achieve certification from ISO22000 and as a result gain new business from markets which were previously out of reach. I would recommend this course to co-workers or others looking for a HACCP level 3 qualification.

Amanda Jane Crickmore
Success Story

Amanda Jane Crickmore studied a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care as well as completing an online learning course in Safe Handling of Medication Level 2, through her employers, Housing and Support Solutions, which works closely with Grimsby Institute Group to develop employees' skills.

Amanda said: "I really enjoy learning and would study in any spare minute i had, ofter staying up into the early hours of the morning.
"My life was busy at the time of studying as i was working 30 hours and volunteering for four hours as well as studying via distance learning.
"I started a beginners' computer course in addition, as well as being a busy mum of two."

Amanda discovered that training anddevelopment was tailored to her individual needs to fit around her exisiting commitments.
She said: "I felt i did not have to rush my diploma and i knew if i needed anything, i could go to the Grimsby Institute Group and i would get the support i needed"

Success Story Fox's Biscuits

After meeting with the Grimsby Institute, Paul Carbutt of Fox’s Biscuits decided to use the Sector Work Based Academy as an alternative method of recruitment and pre-employability training in partnership with the Institute.

Fox’s have previously had problems with retention, attracting the right calibre of staff and the level of health and safety amongst their employees. After discussing their requirements with the Grimsby Institute, the benefits of using the Sector Work Based Academy and pre-employability training became evident and Fox’s soon saw results. Paul said: “Existing staff are much happier with the new recruitment method as trained staff entering production are more motivated, aware of procedures, health and safety and are at a higher standard than previous years"

After rating the quality of the training as "Excellent" and gaining support from senior management after seeing the huge benefits within the factory, Fox’s Biscuits have decided to roll out the programme at other sites, within the 2 Sisters Food Group, umbrella across the country.

Paul continued: "On the first day of the training week I asked a member of staff who has already done the course to come into the room and give a talk to the group. This had a positive effect on their attitude towards the training as they heard someone explaining how much they enjoyed the course and how it has helped them get a job in the factory."

The Grimsby Institute is looking forward to their future training collaborations with Fox’s Biscuits and the 2 Sisters Food Group.
